Dell is responsible for creating the company’s strategic technical direction and new programs as well as providing engineering subject matter expertise for software, network, and hardware solutions.  He manages the engineering processes and documentation to ensure the delivery of high-quality systems. Dell addresses the user’s needs by creating working prototypes early in the design and development process, building on decades of experience driving projects in this agile fashion. Dell brings his deep expertise in communication system development for robotic systems, POS systems, enterprise routers, carrier-grade telecom analysis equipment, wireless MANET, sensor networks, airborne networking, and satellites. 

Prior to Fuse, Dell served as a software manager and lead engineer at San Diego Research Center, Argon ST, and Boeing (via acquisitions), responsible for various R&D wireless networking efforts and the ORBCOMM Gen 2 Satellite development effort. He previously served as a software engineering instructor for UCSD Extension and was a principal engineer for Acterna, developing telecommunications test equipment. Earlier in his career, he worked at Newport Systems and Cisco developing the first PC-based router. Dell is an IEEE Senior Member (communications, robotics, control) and member of the American Mathematical Society. He holds a Ph.D., M.S., and B.S. in mathematics from the University of California, San Diego, Irvine, and Santa Barbara, respectively.

Q. How long have you been involved with The Open Group?

While never a Member, I have been developing software-based systems utilizing UNIX® and X windows applications for 20 years, and referencing the standards of The Open Group. 

Q. What do you do, and how long have you been doing it?

Developing communications software and hardware systems for over 30 years. 

Q. Why did your organization become a Member of The Open Group and what does/will your involvement look like?

We are interested in improving and developing systems which comply with the SOSA (Sensor Open System Architecture) and other standards-based software and hardware.   We wish to participate in the standards organizations and meetings. 

Q. How has/will membership in The Open Group benefit you, your organization, and the industry at large?

It will benefit Fuse and the greater tactical communications ecosystem since we will have early business intelligence on the directions standards are moving to, and we will be able to develop conformant systems and influence those standards. 

Q. Why is it important for other organizations to join The Open Group?

They will get to participate in the standards organization. 

Q. What are your hobbies?

Skiing, surfing, sailing, and music.
